Sinnerman – FREE song!

One day while watching the old Twilight Zone on Netflix, I came across and episode titled “The Passerbys”. As I was reading up about the episode in Wikipedia, I noticed that the song in the episode was titled “Black is the Colour (Of My True Love’s Hair”. I looked up the song on Youtube, and came across a version by Nina Simone. As I was listening to the song, I saw a video on the side bar by her that caught my attention, it was titled “Sinnerman”. I started listening to it, and then saw a version by the 16 Horsepower. I took a listen to theirs and liked it. It hit me then, to do a cover version of the song. The song is an old spiritual that goes back to the 1950’s. I started off trying to follow the structure of the song, which I wasn’t a big fan of, so I decided to change things up. I also started thinking of the foot stomp/hand clap of Johnny Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut you Down” as well as the chain part of Joe Bonamassa’s song called “Ballad of John Henry” (I realized later on that I was thinking of Johnny Cash’s “Ain’t No Grave”) I needed a heavy hitting bass beat, and had to go to a sample of that sound from Queen’s “We Will Rock You”.

I’ve been working on this song for over a month. After a few misfires, I got the structure down pretty quick. I wasn’t sure what to do with the video and that took a while. It worked out, as I got a cold and couldn’t sing for a while. Then allergies blasted me. I consider this a real “fire and brimstone” song.

As usual with these songs, I offer it as a free download and have done a lyric video for it. Enjoy!
